Our History
James River Runners was founded in 1979 by Jeff and Christie Schmick, who turned a small canoe and tube livery into one of Virginia’s premier river outfitters. Their passion for the James River brought visitors from all 50 states and 86 countries, and their legacy lives on through the beloved JRR Chili Cook-Off, which has raised over $300,000 for local fire and rescue.
In 2008, ownership passed to Chris and Paige Wilkes, who faithfully ran the business for 17 seasons—expanding outreach, leading cleanups, and keeping the focus on family-friendly river fun.
In 2025, a new generation took the helm: Tom Paquette, Chris Long, and Kevin Badke. We've been floating the Warren to Hatton stretch of river since 2005 and consider it a sacred stretch of the James. We grew up on this river—and now, as parents, we’re proud to raise our own children on its waters through James River Runners.
About the Founders
Jeff and Christie Schmick founded James River Runners in 1979. What began as a small canoe and tube livery quickly grew into one of the largest canoe, kayak, raft, and tube rental companies on the James River.
For decades, Jeff and Christie built a loyal following — helping countless Boy Scout troops, church groups, University of Virginia departments and students, and river lovers from across all 50 states and 86 countries.

They were passionate supporters of the Scottsville community. Around 1989, they launched the JRR Chili Cook-Off to support local volunteer rescue and fire departments, raising over $300,000 through the years.
After a long and impactful run, Jeff and Christie retired, leaving behind a strong legacy of river adventure and community spirit.
